Bat and ball

Event: an exhibition of art and photography
Preview: Tuesday 24th September 2024
Opened: Wednesday 25th September 2024
Closed: Friday 4th October 2024

The exhibition was timed to coincide with the Caribbean Premier League cricket matches in Guyana. It was curated by Dennis de Caires, a Barbados-based artist and gallerist, and Christina Grell, a Trinidadian gallerist based in Guyana.
The curators selected bat and ball as the theme for their first exhibition because it is an intrinsic part of local culture. Nearly everyone who has grown up in Guyana has played bat and ball at some point. Most Guyanese have vivid memories of bottom-house or back-yard games of cricket, or games played in the part, the road, a bit of pasture or on the beach.
Artists were invited to decorate simple homemade bats, similar to the ones used in games of bat and ball. These were displayed alongside a small selection of local photographs of games of bat and ball, as played on a Georgetown street, a local beach and in the hinterland.
Both the bats and the photographs were available for purchase.

We share below a small selection of the artwork on display.
