TITLE:         Testimonies of the Enslaved
DATE:          Tuesday 9th June 2026
TIME:           5.00 PM
VENUE:       Moray House Trust, 239 Camp & Quamina Streets.
Suggested donation: $2000

The session – Testimonies of the Enslaved – will appeal to anyone interested in Guyana’s history, especially those wishing to explore African ancestry through the use of archival resources. It is also a chance to share community and family memories as well as thoughts on the shaping of an international three-year project, Voices in Slavery’s Archive: Law, Place and Testimony in British Guiana.

The Voices team is working closely with descendant communities to explore the potential uses of the Guyanese ‘Protector of Slaves’ records (1819-1834).   These rare testimonies reveal how the enslaved resisted family separation, overwork, violence and other issues.  Read alongside the Slave Registers (1813–1834) and other archives, they open new paths for family and community research. The team will share early insights and case studies of named individuals and plantations and invite you to contribute your own knowledge and histories (if you wish). Your perspectives will help guide the project’s future directions.

The Voices project is being led by the University of Edinburgh in collaboration with the University of Guyana, Xavier University, the University of Sheffield Digital Humanities Institute, The National Archives (UK), the Walter Rodney National Archives of Guyana and Guyana SPEAKS.   It is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
