Gaiutra Bahadur is the author of Coolie Woman: The Odyssey of Indenture, a personal history of indenture shortlisted in 2014 for the Orwell Prize, the British literary prize for artful political writing. She has held literary residencies at MacDowell and the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center in Italy and has twice won the New Jersey State Council on the Arts Award for Prose. Her essays, reporting and criticism have appeared in The New York Times, The Nation, The Virginia Quarterly Review, Lapham’s Quarterly, The New Republic, Dissent and other publications. She teaches journalism and English as an associate professor at Rutgers University in Newark.

Gaiutra’s main reading will be a short story, The Stained Veil. It was first published in adda, the literary magazine of the Commonwealth Writers Foundation in the UK, and in the US, in the Feminist Press anthology of Asian American creative writing Go Home! It will be reprinted this year in the New York-based literary magazine Drunken Boat and the Brazilian literary magazine Punado.
