In September 1952 a young American couple, Howard and Marian Irwin, arrived in British Guiana. Howard Irwin was to teach Biology at Queen’s College. They would live in the colony for four years. During their stay, Marian Irwin kept a journal and corresponded by letter with her parents weekly. Her mother preserved the letters which Marian’s daughter, Dorothy, would compile (along with other material) in a book, Years of High Hopes, published by Hansib in 2016.
This short film, featuring extracts from Marian’s early letters and diary entries, gives a sense of day to day life in the colony.
This session continues the Samaan Tree Series.
