This is our third exhibition using cricket bats as a canvas and working at the intersection of sport and art. That is a deliberate choice. Cricket is part of our common cultural canon in the West Indies. Even if we aren’t all captivated by art, most of us watch, talk about and/or participate in cricket.
This year we have asked artists to tell a story, to create a narrative on the bat. We shared
three examples of how stories can be told in different ways. One example is a sculpture, one is a song and one is a poem. The sculpture is an intricate rendering of a cricket match in the Corentyne. The song tells a mythical tale of everyman characters at an informal game. The poem celebrates one West Indian cricketer’s confidence and charisma at the crease: his batting, it suggests, was an extension of his way of being in the world.
We invite you to visit the exhibition to see how homemade cricket bats have once again been transformed into works of art.
