Shifting power: Guyana’s energy mix

Activity: Panel discussion
Host: Moray House Trust
Date: Saturday 2nd October 2021
Time: 5PM Guyana/New York, 10PM UK

Several generations of Guyanese have endured blackouts and unreliable and insufficient energy. There have been many proposals over the years to boost Guyana’s energy supply. A few particularly ambitious projects are poised to start or are underway. What could (or should) our future energy mix be? Should we rely on gas? Focus on hydro? Tilt to solar and wind? Or hedge our bets and pursue a judicious mix of all of these?

Our panel evaluated some of the options and weighed the pros and cons.
Simone Mangal-Joly (international environmental and development specialist) began with an overview of current plans, protocols and policies and asked what factors come into play when choosing our energy mix and who gets to decide.
Alfred Bhulai (renewable energy entrepreneur) offered a comparative analysis of the various forms of energy. The Hon. David Patterson (MP and former Minister of Public Infrastructure) reviewed the early stages of the gas-to-shore proposal. Maurice Veecock, (retired hydropower engineer) assessed the Amaila Falls Hydropower Project.

Moray House Trust was founded on the ethos that “a culture thrives and develops where ideas circulate and are robustly debated and interrogated.” This panel was one of many organised by the Trust to stimulate discussion and contribute to public discourse.
