Activity: Public lecture at Moray House Trust

Date: Tuesday 19th March 2024
Time: 6.00 PM
Tickets: $500 in advance, $1000 at the door

The late Lloyd Best (1934-2007) was a Trinidadian economist and social philosopher. A committed regionalist, he spoke and taught in the three main languages of the Caribbean: English, French and Spanish and once described the Caribbean as ‘the workshop of the world.’ Lloyd Best was a fiercely independent Caribbean intellectual who was not easily categorized politically.
Professor Mandle will discuss Best’s views concerning how to reform the economies of the Caribbean so as to better serve the people of the region. He will also talk about how his strategy was discussed in Trinidad and Tobago but was rejected. All of this will cast light on the choices available to Guyana now that it is a major petroleum exporter. Professor Jay Mandle is an economist who has published 14 books and has a longstanding association with Guyana and the Caribbean.
As is customary, there will be an opportunity for questions and comments afterwards.
