THE MORAY HOUSE TRUST YOUNG WRITERS POETRY WORKSHOPS, 2012

Introduction: The Moray House Trust (MHT) Young Writer’s Workshops for poets is a series of workshops which will support poets who are already writing in honing their craft. It will also introduce aspiring poets to the technical aspects of the form; will encourage their writing by providing a forum in which they can present as well as technical feedback on their work.

MHT aims to provide the space and to negotiate technical support and well as to source other resources from Guyana’s corporate community in sustaining this project. The Bank of Nova Scotia has so far generously responded to this call and will support the first two workshops in April and May 2012.

Master Artist & Literary Expert in Action & Interaction with Young Poets
This workshop is aimed at young writers already producing poetry in which they will be exposed to the work and process of a master artist and expert in literary appreciation and will be able to have their own work presented and critiqued.

Main Aim of Workshop
To support upcoming poets in strengthening & honing their craft.

Participants
15 – 20 upcoming writers of poetry (out of school youth who already write and/or perform their own poetry aged 17 – 35)

Master Practitioners
Poet Ian McDonald & Literary Expert Dr Joyce Jonas

Facilitators
Dr Paloma Mohamed & Vanda Radzik

Methodology
The workshop will expose upcoming writers of poetry to a master artist and prizewinner poet Ian McDonald and to Dr Joyce Jonas, an expert in literature and critical appraisal / poetry appreciation, who will share their process, knowledge, and understanding of the techniques associated with the craft, theory and practice of writing poetry. Young Writers will have an opportunity to have their original work presented and critiqued in a responsible, supportive and nurturing space.

Follow Up
It is hoped that there will be other follow-up sessions to this introductory workshop over the coming year with a view towards having the young writers poems edited, collectively approved & published with the support of the Moray House Trust, possibly as a special edition of Kyk-Over-Al
