Guyana Folk – Songs of a People

Activity: Concert
Host: Moray House Trust
Date: Thursday 19th February 2015

Al Creighton, Director of the National School of Theatre, Arts and Drama provided an overview and introduction. Russel Lancaster hosted and co-ordinated another wonderful exhibition of Guyanese musical talent featuring the following groups:

The Korokwa Singers sang Nation Ah Weh you Nation and Timber Man among others.
The Korokwa Singers, an off-shoot the Woodside Choirs International, concentrate mainly on Folk Music in all its varied forms.  The group currently boasts some 15 members and they have performed in Brazil, and at numerous events in Guyana and the Caribbean.  Their production for Carifesta X was the precursor to folk performances during the Mashramani celebrations in 2011 and 2013.  Their aim is to record, preserve and perform the extensive collection of folk songs indigenous to Guyana and the region.

The Messengers Music Ministry sang Beautiful Guyana and other folk songs.
The Messengers Music Ministry has been performing for many years in Guyana and is one of the most versatile a capella groups in the country. They were adjudged Best Small Group at the National Choral Festival in 2013. They have performed at church, at national events and at corporate functions.

Buxton Fusion performed Sitira Gal, Hear Auntie Bess and others.
The Buxton Fusion Music School was formed in 2006, with the purpose of continuing the folk traditions and the drumming culture indigenous to Guyana.  Deo Persaud and Marlon “Chucky” Adams decided to put together the project because of circumstances at the time where Buxton was seen a haven for criminal activity.  Its aim was to get the children to concentrate their attention through music. Because many of them had suffered some form of trauma in the dysfunctional environment, the school gave them the opportunity to congregate and practice, sing songs and play their instruments twice a week. This
allowed them to build self-worth. They have performed all across Guyana for civic society,
political groups and recently at the Rupununi Arts Festival with international Artistes.
