Guyana’s Oil: What future?

Activity Panel presentation
Host Moray House Trust
Date Thursday 14th March 2019
Venue Senate House, London

Collin Constantine (economist) and Dr Jan Mangal (engineer) joined David Jessop OBE to discuss ‘Guyana’s Oil: what future?’ at Moray House Trust’s first panel event at Senate House in London in March 2019. There was a good turnout, a lively discussion, and, as the clips below will show, no shortage of topics for contemplation.

In her brief words of welcome, Doreen de Caires, a Trustee, noted:

“The Trust was set up in December 2011 in memory of my husband, David de Caires. Together we founded the independent newspaper, Stabroek News, in Guyana some thirty years ago. My husband believed profoundly in the value of public discourse, in the free flow of ideas and opinions. Under his editorship, the letters pages of Stabroek News attempted to engage the nation in conversation at a time when many voices were mute, and a dreary silence prevailed. Moray House Trust has organized events with a similar thrust. We have sought to promote civic debate and discussion on issues ranging from the sugar industry and constitutional reform to the nature of leadership in the West Indies cricket team. Ideas and opinions on these topics have been field tested at our events and granted the freedom to evolve. Our speakers don’t have all the answers. They start a dialogue that helps the public sphere to mature, to re-accustom itself to intelligent questioning. This event, our first in London, has been convened in a similar spirit. “
