Representations of Race in Guyanese Writing

Activity: Film and Discussion Series
Host: Moray House Trust
Date: Thursday 29th January 2015

The third session in the series, ‘Race: A Guided Discussion’, began to narrow the broader general discussions about the genesis and objective basis of ideas about race through readings and a discussion about how race is represented in Guyanese literature. There were ten presentations of ten minutes each which examined a wide variety of writing from very early writing on Guyana’s old plantation journals, to the writing of Milltelholzer, Carter, Gilroy, Wilson Harris, and Janice Shinebourne as well as cartoon representations of race, the work of Walter Rodney and newer writers like Sonia Yarde and Mosa Telford.

Presenters at session three were Dr. Mark Tumbridge, Petember Persaud, Dr. Joyce Jonas, Sonia Yarde, Vanda Radzik, Barrington Braithwaite, Ras. Michael Jeune, Dr. Juanita Cox and Mosa Telford. Highly appreciative audience members said the session was a
“veritable literary treat” and a “journey into self expression and introspection”.
