The Life and Death of Sylvia was one of Edgar Mittelholzer’s more popular novels among his Guyanese readership. The novel is, ostensibly, about a young girl in 1930s British Guiana.  However, as the analysis by his friend and contemporary AJ Seymour and also Dr Juanita Cox Westmaas showed, Mittelholzer’s novels were complex with themes, messages and resonances operating on many different levels. There was also a slideshow and musical accompaniment to conjure Georgetown at about the time when the novel was set.
