The workshop and debate stemmed from a perceived need to create opportunities for young people to craft opinions and articulate their ambitions for Guyana’s future and themselves in it. This was a collaborative effort by the Guyana National Youth Council (GNYC), Moray House Trust (MHT) and the University of Guyana Students’ Society (UGSS) . The aim was to try to enhance the debating and public speaking skills of youth through civil society engagement.
A workshop for twelve participants sought to impart some of the core skills of public speaking. The participants then had a chance to put their skills into practice in a debate in the evening. The organisers extend sincere thanks to the facilitators: Derwayne Wills, Sara Bharrat and Dr Joyce Jonas and to Chevy Devonish who presided over the debates.
Warm thanks also to the local companies that provided limited sponsorship for the event: Farfan & Mendes, Hand-in-Hand, Hughes, Fields & Stoby and Mings’ Products and Services.
